In a panic for a thoughtful last minute Mother’s Day Gift? Don’t be, Locatile’s got your back. Just like your mom always does. Click here for some inspired Mother’s Day gift ideas!

Mother. Mom. Mommy. Mama. Mami…

So many names for the person in our life who is our biggest cheerleader, our protector, our safe place and our home. Many cultures have tens if not hundreds of words to describe concepts that are important to their way of life. Did you know the Inuit’s have dozens of words for snow?

And not just words, but feelings. The word ‘Mom’ alone can evoke many emotions. Because at one point in time she was the center of your universe. And you will always be the center of hers.

There are also so many different ways one can become a mother. There is the obvious way, the way most will think of first, which is through the agonizingly beautiful way of one growing inside another, but there are so many other beautiful and selfless ways for someone to become ‘Mom’. We have Aunts who can step into the role as mother when needed. There are Stepmothers out there who have forsaken so much to make our lives a little (or a lot) better. There are foster moms and adoptive moms and neighbors and grandmothers and teachers and friends… and the list goes on. So many selfless women who see a void and step up to fill it.

So. As we approach the holiday that keeps the U.S. Postal Service as busy as Christmas and Easter, help celebrate that special woman in your life. The calendar keeper, the captain of the ship, the one who knows where your black soccer shorts (the Adidas ones, NOT the Nike ones) are, and the only one who remembers where the small scar on your knee came from. Celebrate the women who know best how to soothe an ache, whether it be on your body or in your heart.

As the day draws nearer and you realize you haven’t found the perfect gift yet, turn away from something quick and impersonal and look to Locatile to honor the unique woman you get to call ‘Mom’. There are so many different and wonderful items right here in our own community! Our own shop proprietors have hand selected some wonderful ideas from their shops, all you have to do is browse in the comfort of your own home. Check out all the shops here! Just put “Mother’s Day” in the search box and get to shopping! Select local pick up at check out and you’re set!

She’s put so much thought into you, put a little into her Mother’s Day gift to show her how important she is!

Gratitude + Appreciation

Gratitude + Appreciation

When we started out to create, we did not do it alone. We want to thank our families and close friends who gave feedback, resources and encouragement. Building a virtual marketplace during the pandemic means our spouses and children have been intimately involved and we appreciate their support and also sharing this journey with them. We care deeply about the health of the local economy, and we believe can make a positive impact, and having our children involved has been very special.

During the early stages the Illinois Small Business Development Center at McHenry County College helped us expedite our incorporation as well as make important legal and financial determinations. Resulting in mentorship and marketing/PR support from Sue Dobbe of Dobbe Marketing and PR. These consultations and resources helped shape our business model, marketing strategy and launch planning. We highly recommend the ISBDC not only for those considering a startup, also for those looking to expand an existing business. This grant funded program is a resource available to businesses in McHenry County and their services include:

  • business advising, guiding business growth
  • timely courses where you can network with other small-business owners
  • entrepreneurial resources including assistance obtaining funding

The development of a multi-merchant virtual marketplace has many complexities, including fulfillment. As we determined how to best execute options for shipping and local pickup, Jackie Speciale of MAC Automation provided business coaching to help us flush out scenarios as we refined the minimum viable product for our business. She was a great sounding board and generous with her time and advice. was made possible by the web development and design prowess of Peak3 Digital and Mowgli Studios, as well as sound tax advice by Jason Firak, CPA. The work with these partners has just begun, and the countless hours already in the books has resulted in a website that is designed for the customer and for the backend functionality for our merchant partners. We took on removing headaches and obstacles for small shops that typically deter them from selling online, and we are grateful to Peak3 for their commitment to making this a reality.

We would be remise not to mention the 33 generous individuals who contributed to our startup campaign on GoFundMe. Their confidence in our business idea raised $4,175 towards our $10,000 goal. This funding helped expedite our rate to market and provided the seed money to build the eCommerce platform. When people shop at a local independent business 68% of each dollar impacts the local economy, and these startup donors helped us build a sales channel that will help consumers shift online spending from national retailers to small businesses. We’re almost half way to our goal, and any future contributions will just further the services we provide to the merchants and investments into our platform development.

In November of 2020 we embarked with the vision to support our community and communities like ours by the development and marketing of an eCommerce Marketplace for small independent businesses, and we grateful for the many who helped make this a reality. We can’t wait to share data and the impact made on each zip code with merchants on Our mission is for people to really connect with what it means to shop and support small. That if you #thinklocalfirst even when online shopping you can make a difference to a small business owner. Even if it’s not in your town, you can learn a little bit about each store and know your online spending made a difference to their dream, to their employees and in their community.

“Walk with the dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful, the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground. Let their spirit ignite a fire within you to leave this world better than when you found it.” ― Wilferd Peterson

Locatile is actively utilizing and promoting the hashtag #thinklocalfirst. Why? It’s at the core of our mission, to lift up small brick and mortar businesses through a virtual mercantile giving shops another sales channel through online shopping. It’s a philosophy of local patronage and for people to audit how they can #thinklocalfirst before shopping a national retailer. It goes beyond just retail and is applicable to dining and services as well. When you shop local you do good with your wallet and impact the local economy! When you buy local, it keeps four times the funds in the local economy compared to shopping in chains. We will be a voice and partner to locally-owned, independent businesses and will raise awareness of the importance of shopping local and we encourage others to do the same and join us to #thinklocalfirst.

It’s the mission of Locatile to encourage you to #thinklocalfirst and in addition to shopping on there are many ways to support local businesses, including things you can do for free. Shifting spending habits to local small businesses keeps dreams alive and ensures that brick and mortar businesses not only survive the pandemic, that they will THRIVE expanding their customer base to online complimenting the in-person shopping experience. We appreciate you joining the #thinklocalfirst movement.

Local Pickup or Shipping, Your Choice!

Local Pickup or Shipping, Your Choice!

Wondering how the great items from the small businesses will be fulfilled? Two options are available. Each merchant offers Local Pickup or Shipping. When shopping products add them to your cart and you will be offered the option to select local pickup or shipping.

Local Pickup is free and operates a lot like curbside pickup from restaurants. Orders won’t be ready right away, yet once your order is prepared a notification will be sent via email. Once the order is ready, you can pickup your items during shop business hours. Shop operating hours can be found by clicking here and visiting the storefront you ordered from. Still unsure about when a shop is open? Either call the phone number or click on the social media icons provided on the storefront pages, those are great ways to confirm hours of operations. Please note that shops will have varied hours and that holidays and weather may affect these hours.

Locatile’s mission is to promote shopping local online, and for shoppers to still connect and learn more about the people and boutiques they are supporting by purchasing on this platform rather than on a large retailers website. So selecting Local Pickup is a great way to interact with the businesses.

Once you receive notification your item is ready for Pickup, you will park near the shop and can either walk into the store and at their checkout counter share that you are a Locatile shopper and picking up an order. You can give them your name to retrieve your package. If you’re sending someone in your place forward your order confirmation email with them if the shop owner asks.

If you prefer to curbside pickup when you park, call the shop number and let them know that you are parked for curbside delivery from Locatile and give them your name, car model/color and where you are parked. If you need the number for the shop, click here and select the shop and the number can be found on the storefront page. Many towns have CURBSIDE parking spots. These spots are for shops and restaurants so you can use these or find a spot by store to either run in for pickup or call for curbside delivery.

Shipping is also offered for all orders. If you shop online often you are probably accustom to paying for shipping. At check out shipping is calculated by weight from each merchant. Meaning, if you shop from three independent stores, you will see three shipping charges. Once the order has shipped tracking numbers are sent via email, and typically items are delivered within 3 to 5 days of shipping. The email tracking is sent by Sendle our shipping partner. So check your inbox and spam for notifications from Sendle. To keep rates competitive, at this time standard shipping is through the USPS. To set expectations, we ask that you don’t compare shipping from local small shops to national retail eCommerce delivery options. It’s not apples to apples and you won’t see free shipping or same day/one day arrivals. As our virtual mercantile platform grows we will continue to refine and develop fulfillment options to best serve the needs of the customer and small businesses.

If you have questions about an order or Local Pickup or Shipment contact the shop owner for assistance you can also:

  1. Log in to your Account Dashboard
  2. Locate the sub-order number in question
  3. Click the Order Inquiry button
  4. Complete the quick form to send a message to the merchant
